Supersize Me

This is a trailer for “Supersize Me”, a 2004 documentary featuring Morgan Spurlock about fast food.  Spurlock only eats McDonald’s for a month, and records the affects it has on his body, and his mind.  The results are shocking and even led to McDonald’s eliminating the “supersize” option from their menu.  The famous documentary has raised many questions; one being about the healthiness of the food served at McDonald’s and other fast food places.
It’s surprising to see how many times Morgan was asked to supersize his meal while eating at McDonald’s. Most workers are actually trained to ask this after a customer orders because all McDonald’s cares about is making a large profit. They know their food is unhealthy and their portion sizes are too large as it is, yet they still continue to ask people to supersize their meal. In the trailer Morgan is seen eating one of McDonald’s supersized double cheeseburger meals, while sitting in his car. The portion size is so large he has trouble finishing it all and actually gets sick before he does. Not only are the portion sizes to large, but almost all of the choices on McDonald’s menu contain mostly carbs, fats and sugar. In the full length movie it actually shows that there are only two things on the menu that do not contain sugar. Knowing all of this, it is not as surprising to hear all of the negative effects that came from only eating this food.
In this one-minute trailer, eating supersized fast food is associated with obesity and diseases. After one month of his experiment, Spurlock went to the see doctor and was told that this kind of eating would do damage to his heart and blood. The description sheet showed that some of the numbers are too high. “You are going to die”, the doctor warned him at last and asked him to stop eating like that immediately.
In this short trailer the dangers of McDonalds and other fast food restaurants are depicted. Spurlock was seen getting sick after eating unhealthy portions of McDonalds. However, he continues to stay on his month long splurge. Spurlock describes he wants “more, more, and more…I can’t stop.” He knows the health related risk, he has seen the charts and has heard the doctors, but he can’t stop. Many people after viewing this film, or even just the short trailer is enough, will continue to buy and consume these foods knowing the truths.

1) Why do you think that the fast food industry continues to sell some of the unhealthiest food,     even though they know the terrible affects it can have?
2) How do you think eating at McDonald’s for a month straight would affect your mind and body?
3) Do you think "supersize" fast food does "super huge" damages to your health, as the trailer indicates? Why?
4) Why do you think people still consume some of the unhealthiest foods knowing the truths and the facts? Do you think there are ways to stop this?

  1. The Fast Food industry simply does not care about the health of the consumers of their product, they only care about their profit. The Fast Food industry is just that, an industry, and industries generally want to make profit. Eating McDonalds for a month would be horrible for you, most likely you would gain 20 pounds or so of fat. People still consume this food because they think it tastes good and apparently do not care about their health. Personally, i hate fast food and generally do not eat it because its so bad for you, it doesn't taste that great, and it makes you feel terrible because of all the saturated fat and grease.

  2. Even though fast food has detrimental effects on our health, the fast food industry continues to sell these products simply to make a profit. No matter how bad it may be for our health, as long as people are buying it, fast food places will continue to sell it. I think that supersize meals definitely have a negative effect on our body since overeating could potentially lead to obesity, which has a whole array of other health risks associated with it. Although consuming fast food on a regular basis is a serious health risk, people still do it because it's quick and easy, and others may do it for pure satisfaction. In my opinion, the risks of eating fast food on a regular basis by far outweigh the benefits, so that's something I will continue to avoid.

  3. I think that eating Mcdonalds for a month strait would drive me crazy. As seen in the video the man being "super sized" struggles with waking up in the morning knowing he is going to McDonalds again. I would be depressed, getting fat, and hating the routine I would be putting myself through. In my opinion, no sane person would go to McDonalds everyday for a month or even every day for a week! In conclusion, my mind and body would both deteriorate.

  4. The fast food industry continues to sell some of the unhealthiest food because they want money. They don't care what effect it has on peoples' health. They know that if people consume their fast food a few times it won't have a significant effect on their health, and they will be making money off of these people. It is not the fast food companies decision on how much of their food is consumed by one single person. We know that this food is not good for our health, yet we continue to eat it and we continue to give our money to the fast food industry.I could never eat McDonalds for a month straight. I do not eat any fast food as it is so I couldn't even imagine what it would do to someones body if they only at McDonalds. I think people still eat fast food even thought they know what it does to their health because even though it is unhealthy, it is fast and convenient.

  5. The food they sell is cheap to produce so they will keep selling the food for profit. I am sure I would definitely not do anything if I ate McDonalds a month straight. I feel like it would hurt just walk up a flight of stairs or it would be impossible. It really is scary how supersizing meals almost killed him in one month. My first assumption he would of got really fat but it was shocking how fast he got to the point of where proballby most people get to over quite sometime but he did it in only in a month. Like he said he couldn't stop sounds to me people are addicted to eating unhealthy.

  6. Even though the fast food industry knows the terrible consequences of those unhealthiest food they produced, they have no worries as for them, what matter most is just money that get into their pocket. As far as I concern, menu in McDonald's are less healthy as they contain mostly carbs, fats and sugar that can harm the body if they were taken excessively. Since the 'supersize' fast food also might contain 'supersize' amount of carbs, fats and sugar. Thus, it may also cause the 'super huge' damages to our health. It however, will never manage people from stop buying those fast foods because the taste are so addicting. Plus, since media keeps advertising those fast food, there will be no other way to stop this.

  7. Fast food companies sell unhealthy foods because that is what is cheap. Obviously this documentary is blown out of proportion because he is eating McDonalds for every meal when, in reality, people eat it over a long period of time. The first time I watched this documentary, I actually got hungry and ate McDonalds. People will continue to eat it because it is fast and convenient and also the full documentary goes into detail about how our lives are full of advertising from childhood from Ronald McDonald to playplaces in restaurants.

  8. The unfortunate truth here (even thought it's probably been said over and over) is that everything is all about the money. Fast food is cheap and convenient, so companies produce it, and people buy it. Many people simply do not have enough time in their schedule to run to the grocery store and make a home cooked meal every night. Our society is almost forcing us into purchasing these foods by making them the most attractive option. Yes, this is extremely damaging to one's health if it is all they eat. Fast foods claim to be "natural" or "fresh" but almost never healthy.

  9. I have previously seen this movie, and I thought it was very interesting and informative. What I took away from this trailer and movie is that it is honestly up to the consumer to decide what is good for them and what isn't. There is an undeniable parallel between the public's outlook on the tobacco industry and the fast food industry. Both tobacco and fast food are terrible for your health if consumed in mass (supersized) quantity. And the American public recognizes this. However I do not believe that there is anything wrong with how McDonald's is offering food to consumers. Saying that they only want money is not justification for persecution. If someone told me that I would make billions of dollars a year running a fast food company that offered straight junk food. I would do it in a heartbeat. I wouldn't encourage eating McDonald's everyday any more than I would encourage someone smoking multiple packs of cigarettes everyday. However some people only use tobacco products when in social environments or other special occasion. Tobacco is proven to be a substance that encourages good feelings and discourages bad ones.So if you want to have fast food once in a while because its quick or you want to treat yourself to a big mac, I say go for it.

  10. The fast food industry continues to sell unhealthy food like this because it is all about profit. Also, they know people place a lot of value on their time. In America, time is money. If people can get food quickly while on the go, they will settle for unhealthy food more often. Fast food places know this so they make cheap food that is tasty so people come back. I could never eat McDonalds a month straight. I would feel so sick and get so out of shape it would disgust me to the point of not eating. Yes, the supersize concept does super damage to health, as shown in this documentary.

  11. I believe that the food industries continue to sell not only some, but a lot of their unhealthy foods, for the fact that the taste is most appealing to the customers. Customers disregard much of the health risks/affects that the food may have on their bodies simply because it tastes good and makes them feel good. Although I eat fast food, I only like it on occasion. With this being said, I definitely feel like eating McDonalds everyday would be very stressful on my body. It would make my body feel so disgusting and somewhat “heavy,” just because I know how unhealthy the food really is for the body. I don’t necessarily feel as though the “super size” factor of the meals causes “super huge” damages, but in essence it does contribute a little more negative health relations than do the original size meals for its larger quantity.

  12. I think McDonalds shows that maximum financial benefit is more important to corporations than consumer health. A supersized item is so far from proper nutritional value that it proves what is important to the corporation. Selling unhealthy food given the obvious health risk shows the nature of capitalism and globalization. McDonalds knows that a mass of the population will sacrifice nutritional value for cheap prices. It is our responsibility as consumers to know what we are putting in our bodies and how it will effect us. Spurlock knew this, and through his documentary was able to prove first hand that what we hear about McDonalds is true. Although Spurlock’s fast food diet was a hyperbole, many people do consume McDonalds on a regular basis. In these cases, perhaps eating a filling meal of fast food while saving time and money is more important than personal health. But when the meals start adding up and serious health problems develop, medication probably exceeds the cost of what it would have taken to eat healthy in the first place. I don’t think fast food has super huge damages if eaten in moderation. I think eating a consistent fast food diet would tear me down physically and mentally and I wouldn’t last more than a day.

  13. I'm not sure why my name wouldn't come up... anyway.
Fast food companies sell the kinds of food that they do because they know people will buy it. If no one bought hamburgers anymore, they would stop selling them. McDonalds technically does have some foods that won't kill you if you eat it for a month. They have salads and parfaits and things like that. But if you ate the regular fast food stuff for a straight month, it would definitely be very bad for you. As for the "supersize" I don't think it matters. If you only eat fast food every once in a while, it doesn't make a difference if it is regular or supersize. And if you were going to eat enough fast food to give yourself a heart attack, yourself a heart attack, you could get there just as effectively by eating regular sized fast food meals.

  14. i think eating mcdonalds for a month straight would kill my body and make me go crazy. it would gross me out but i think they continue to sell the unhealthy food because they know they can still make money off of it. I also think people continue to eat this food because they enjoy it and if it taste good to them, then i guess why stop eating it?
